Understanding Codependency in Relationships: Breaking free from destructive behaviour
Wednesday 16th April, 2025: 10am-1pm
White Rock Hotel, Hastings, East Sussex
In this 3-hr workshop, psychotherapist Christopher Rolls CTA(P), UKCP will present a model of codependency, what it is (and isn't) and tips, tools and strategies for breaking free from harmful behaviours in relationships. This workshop is suitable for any adult, 18 yrs+.
A codependent person has been defined as "one who has let another person's behaviour affect him or her, and who is caught up in attempting to control that person's behaviour". This includes the behaviour of romantic partners, but also of close family members: parents, siblings, children and others. Whole families are affected by co-dependency.
Codependency can often occur in relationships with individuals who are alcoholics or who are alcohol or drug dependent, ones with multiple addictions, trauma histories, and/or who have mental health challenges such as personality disorders or chronic long-term mental health problems. We will explore what it means to be in caring relationships with individuals whose behaviour is destructive, using a judgement-free, compassionate approach.
You might be concerned that you are in a codependent relationship yourself, or you may work with members of the public for whom co-dependency is an issue. Those of us who work in the caring professions - as counsellors, therapists, social workers, etc. - are particularly prone to codependent dynamics. As 'wounded healers,' we often come from families where managing others' issues was the norm.
This workshop is for anyone affected by these themes.
We can heal these relational wounds and patterns, first, by increasing our awareness of them, and then building up more mindful strategies for responding to destructive behaviour. We can break free from harmful behaviours by seeing our part in their continuation and we can build more healthy, mutually rewarding relationships.
PLEASE NOTE: Because of the sensitive nature of this topic, participants are asked to take responsibility for their own safety in attending. No attendee information will be shared by the organiser and all discussions in the workshop will be strictly confidential.
Participants will receive a self-reflection worksheet as part of this training.
